At Darktrace, we are looking for a Communications Manager to help protect the company’s license to operate and promote its technology and growth agenda in North America, one of the company’s biggest growth markets. This is a mid-level role reporting into the Head of Communications for the Americas and it is part of the Darktrace Corporate Affairs team.

The primary focus of this role is to build Darktrace’s brand presence in the US. The Communications Manager will be responsible for building and growing our technology PR and communications program, including building a cadence of proactive media engagement in support of key campaigns and thought leadership topics, working with subject matter experts (SMEs) on reactive and strategic rapid response opportunities, managing our media program at key industry events, and supporting communications activity for major announcements and launches.

The role is based in Darktrace’s New York City office, with a hybrid working model in place (a minimum of 2 days each week in the office). Some travel to national and international locations may be required.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Build and manage a technology PR program in support of key corporate affairs, marketing and wider business goals – including the articulation and delivery of Darktrace’s thought leadership agenda across owned, earned, and paid channels. This includes helping to set the strategy for and manage proactive media outreach for key campaign moments, industry events, and announcements, as well as driving a sustained drumbeat of thought leadership activity that speaks to the domestic agenda. You will also work with SMEs on management of reactive inquiries and rapid response opportunities.
  • Assist with management of Darktrace’s newly selected strategic communications agency (which will work across both the US and UK).
  • Build relationships with journalists, podcast producers, and other opinion forming media and influencers to help build awareness of and understanding of Darktrace in North America to build and protect the company’s reputation.
  • Lead research on media outlets, conferences, podcasts, and other paid, owned and earned opportunities to inform our external communications strategy in North America. You are digitally savvy and can advise on how different channels can best be used to reach different audiences.
  • Prepare executives for external engagements, including drafting briefing materials, talking points, FAQs, and staffing interviews and speaking engagements.
  • Work with the Head of Communications to manage reputation risk, issues, and governance for North America. Work effectively with cross-functional teams including marketing, R&D, legal and more to execute proactive programs and integrated marketing and communications campaigns, including product announcements and industry events (e.g. RSA, Black Hat).
  • Be an ‘enabler’ with content owners and spokespeople within the business – their partner, advisor, and coach – so they can best represent Darktrace externally. Keep your finger on the pulse of the broader AI and cyber security landscape, as well as US market developments more broadly, to ensure we are responding in a timely and effective way. Assist with creation of landscape and media intelligence reports to keep the business informed of relevant external themes and news cycles.
  • Ensure Darktrace effectively “news jacks”, taking advantage of external developments that allow us to effectively position Darktrace as an expert and influential commentator.

Qualifications & Experience

This is a mid-level role, and the ideal Communications Manager will have 3-5 years of experience working in public relations or external communications. Experience in the technology sector is ideal (e.g. enterprise software, AI and/or cybersecurity). PR agency experience is preferred. Required skills include:

  • A strong understanding of the media landscape, particularly in the US, and the types of storylines that will resonate with journalists. The ability to build and maintain productive working media relationships with a variety of reporters, including technology media focused on AI and cyber security, industry vertical media and more. Existing relationships with technology media are a plus.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to synthesize information from a variety of stakeholders and write for a variety of formats and tones of voice. Excellent editing skills and a strong attention to detail.
  • The ability to quickly identify trending topics and work with SMEs to develop relevant storylines that will support Darktrace’s thought leadership agenda and business/reputation objectives.
  • The ability to think proactively, plan and execute multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Digitally savvy and able to operate across a multi-issue, multi-market, multi-channel (traditional and digital) communications landscape and to support the development of effective communications campaigns.
  • Experience in measurement and monitoring tools such is ideal (e.g. Meltwater, Cision, etc)
