Role Summary

Ontic is hiring an Associate Software Engineer to contribute to the development of backend systems that power our SaaS platform. This role is intended for early-career engineers who are building strong foundations in backend development and software engineering practices.

You will work closely with experienced engineers to develop features, fix issues, and improve existing systems, while learning how to build scalable and reliable backend services. Your focus will be on writing high-quality code, understanding system fundamentals, and growing into an independent contributor.

Key Responsibilities

Development & Implementation

• Contribute to building backend services and features using Java, Python, Spring Boot, MongoDB, and Elasticsearch

• Implement well-defined tasks and components with guidance from senior engineers

• Support the development of APIs, integrations, and backend workflows for core platform capabilities

• Contribute to foundational AI or GenAI-enabled backend use cases under guidance, where applicable

Code Quality & Best Practices

• Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code following established engineering standards

• Participate in code reviews and apply feedback to improve code quality

• Follow best practices in version control, testing, debugging, and documentation

Learning & Technical Growth

• Build understanding of backend systems, APIs, data models, and distributed systems fundamentals

• Learn and apply best practices in performance optimization, reliability, and secure software development

Collaboration

• Work with engineers, product managers, and cross-functional teams to deliver assigned tasks

• Communicate progress, blockers, and questions clearly and proactively

• Demonstrate curiosity, ownership, and a strong willingness to learn in a fast-paced environment

Production Awareness

• Support basic debugging and issue resolution in development and production environments

• Develop familiarity with logging, monitoring, and system reliability concepts

• Assist in identifying and resolving performance or stability issues in backend services

Qualifications & Experience

• 0.5 to 2 years of software engineering experience, including internships, academic projects, personal projects, or full-time experience

• Strong foundational knowledge of Java and Python

• Basic understanding of data structures, algorithms, and backend development concepts

• Familiarity with Spring Boot, MongoDB, Elasticsearch, or similar technologies

• Exposure to APIs, databases, and web application development

• Foundational knowledge of Generative AI concepts and interest in applying AI in software systems

• Hands-on experience through academic, personal, open-source, or internship projects

• Familiarity with Git or version control systems

• Exposure to cloud platforms or modern development tools is a plus

• Strong problem-solving ability and attention to detail

• Effective communication and collaboration skills

• Strong willingness to learn and grow in a fast-paced environment

Preferred Qualifications

• Exposure to building backend services using Java or Python in academic, internship, or project settings

• Understanding of REST APIs, microservices concepts, and database design fundamentals

• Awareness of AI-assisted development tools or GenAI application patterns is a plus

• Interest in building scalable SaaS products and learning modern backend engineering practices
